 Shaheed Abu Sayeed

Abu Sayeed, a 25-year-old student from Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur, became a symbol of resistance during the 2024 quota reform protests in Bangladesh. Hailing from a humble background, Sayeed was the youngest of nine children and the only one to pursue higher education, a feat his family achieved through immense sacrifices. He aspired to join the civil service to lift his family out of poverty.

As a key coordinator in the protests demanding reform of the government’s employment quota system, Sayeed stood at the forefront of the movement. On July 16, 2024, during a clash between students and police, Sayeed was shot by rubber bullets. Despite being unarmed and peaceful, he was fatally injured. His death sparked national outrage and he became a martyr for the cause of justice and fairness.

Sayeed’s death not only devastated his family but also ignited a movement for accountability and equality. The location where he was shot has since been named "Shaheed Abu Sayeed Chattar" in his honor, symbolizing his enduring legacy in the fight for social reform..
